In the area of Martinsicuro in the province of Teramo from a vineyard of almost fifty years of age and at an altitude of 290 meters above sea level, extraordinarily exposed to south-south-east, the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG of Cantine Torri was born.
100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, harvested late, towards the end of October with grapes selected by hand from the vine and of a certified organic agriculture.
It is vinified in thermo-conditioned steel vats and once malolactic fermentation is completed the wine ages in concrete tanks for six months, to then be decanted into large 50-hectolitre wooden barrels for a further 18 months and to then also refine in the bottle for no less than another 6 months.
Let’s taste it!
Colour: an intense ruby red, with delicate purple hues and a magnificent consistency.
Smell: the bouquet releases floral and fruity notes with characteristic hints of violet rose, ripe blackberry and plums.
Taste: the palate reveals perceptions consistent with the nose ones with evidence of black cherry in jam, cocoa and leather. The softness is seductive opposed to an intriguing freshness and appropriate tannins anticipating a long and mineral finish.
This is a wine that needs time to reveal itself so I suggest to open it a bit before tasting it, possibly at a temperature between 16 and 18 degrees with a large glass and a wide rim.
I would accompany it with well-structured and tasty dishes and fragrant cheeses like “pasta alla carbonara”, a barbecued leg of lamb, omelettes with livers or a mature pecorino cheese.
